This was, and if I do so say myself, a Herculean attempt at documenting my record collection. I started Djing in 1994 and like any DJ, I have a collection spanning many genres and I've attempted to bunch them by themed mixes. Some of these mixes have been done from Vinyl in an attempt to emulate sets that I've done in the past, some are studio produced and as I gather more, I put new mixes here. There should be something here for most tastes and they should stream uninterrupted straight from this page. Scroll down and read the synopses from each and if you want to download them to your media player, they can all be found here.

I used to DJ a lot of disco when it was having resurgence in the early 90’s. Disco gets a bad name, but if you stray from the mainstream and into the underground there are a lot of lesser known tracks that have had a great deal of influence on the modern house movement. Here are a few of those tracks, see how many samples you can recognise.

Party Bangers

Bounce

Mixed: March 2012

Genre: House

Rogue Track: None/some/all

Highlight: maw's remix of michael jackson's rock with you is a classic.

I don't know what this is really. Bounce seemed to describe what it was getting at. It's got a fair amount of house music in it and it's pretty upbeat.

House Classics Volume 1 - House of Funk

Mixed: june 2009

Genre: funky house

Rogue Track: Young MC – Know How – not a house tune but a regular feature of mid 90’s club sets

Highlight: Mothers ‘All Funked Up’ released in 1993 stands out as a track that was years ahead of its time in both sound and concept.

Before the days in which Filtered Funky House was a genre in its own right, DJ’s such as Joey Negro and Dimitri from Paris had been experimenting with fusing disco and funk basslines with house beats to create a very distinctive funk-driven sound throughout the early to mid 90’s. With nights such as ‘Rulin’ at London’s Ministry of Sound, of which I was a regular between 93-96 this sound became a staple element of my record collection. This is a selection of all-vinyl tracks from that period.

  14. Mother - All Funked Up (Mothers Pride Mix)

House Classics Volume 2 - House Classics

Mixed: june 2009

Genre: house

Rogue Track: alex Gopher’s ‘Party People’ only due to it being released a little later in 99.

Highlight: Alison Limerick’s ‘Where Love Lives’, considered by many a pole to be the definitive house anthem. Discuss.

These are the anthems that were rocking me both on the dance floor and behind the decks in the mid nineties, when house music was all I was listening to. They are mainly vocal garage, and are much more soul and disco influenced, as were my tastes at the time.

  1. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Starting Something (Tommy D Mix)

  14. Dimitri From Paris & Alex Gopher - Party People

House Classics Volume 3 - Handbag

Mixed: september 2009

Genre: house

Rogue Track: Gat Decor’s Passion could be described as any house genre, including this one I suppose

highlight : The Flavour mixing into Jon Pleased Women is one of the best house mixes I have done. I think.

Considered as gay at the time as it probably is now, this is my definitive guide to early nineties hand-bag. A predecessor to many of its subsequent sub-genres this is what Saturday night, for an all too brief period, was all about. Does it age? Not really, but if you were into this sort of cheese at the time, as I was, then you’ll be able to re-capture the moment. Smile!

  1. Lost Tribe - Gimme A Smile (The Delorme vs Dharma Bums Remix)

  2. Tin Tin Out - Always feat Espiritu (Tooley St Mix)

  3. The Cotton Club - In My House

House Classics Volume 4 - House of Pop

Mixed: september 2009

Genre: house

Rogue Track: X-Press 2's lazy is at least 10 years younger than any other track

highlight : boris dlugosch's sublime mix of moloko's bring it back

I could be wrong but i reckon every one of these tracks was either playlisted on radio or were top 40 releases at some point over the last 20 years.

Balearia

Mixed: October 2009

Genre: balearic

Rogue Track: Mory Kante’s Yeke Yeke was more of a classic from the progressive house genre but I’m pretty sure it’s original incarnation was a Balearic number.

Highlight: Gary Clail’s Human Nature. I’d forgotten how brilliant this tune was, and indeed how bizarre Gary’s rap/vocal’s were.

Balearic music has always been difficult to define. It’s origins in the late eighties were characterised by DJ’s who were prepared to mix as eclectic a mix as they could, and as such certain anthems (such as It’s Immaterial’s ‘Driving Away From Home’) could barely be described as even dance music. Throughout the early nineties a definite style began to emerge as laid back electronica began to emulate the sunshine and euphoria that holiday resorts mixed with class A’s characterised. This is an attempt to encompass a selection of classics from the whole period. Ironically I’ve still never been to Ibiza.

  1. Electra - Autumn Love (Rave Mix)

  2. Bass-O-Matic - Fascinating Rhythm

  3. Soul II Soul - Back To Life (How Ever Do You Want Me)

  4. Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days

  13. Gary Clail - Human Nature (Perfecto Mix)

  14. It’s Immaterial - Driving Away from Home

  15. Chris Rea - Josephine (La Version Francaise)

Product Placement - Skillz, Kutz and Noofunk

Mixed: august 2008

Genre: breakbeat

Rogue Track: Monkey Magic - its the original and therefore pre-dates most of this by 20 years

Highlight: Nickodemus’ Give the Drummer Some

A mix which documents some of the new school funk purveyor’s of the last couple of years. And some theme tunes. As suggested by the clever title it mainly consists of work produced by A Skillz, Krafty Kutz and the Fort Knox Five - artists which I think are producing some of the highest quality funky breaks out there at the moment.

  1. Henri Salvadore - Mais-Non Mais-Non (Mah-na Mah-na)

  2. Gensomaden Saiyuki – Monkey Magic

  3. Krafty Kuts & A Skillz - Aint It Funky (Fort Knox Five Vocal Remix)

  20. Krafty Skillz – Another One Bites

  21. DJ Yoda – Pussy Cat Feat Mr David Viner

Northern Soul

Mixed: may 2008

Genre: soul

Rogue Track: none

Highlight:Dusty Springfield’s Am I The Same Girl?

Still Water

Mixed: may 2008

Genre: downtempo

Rogue Track: Paliament aren’t really at home in this genre

Highlight: Leftfield’s song of life for being truly ahead of it’s time in 1991

Ambient hip hop? Downtempo breakbeat? I don’t know what you’d call it really, suffice it to say this one is for later in the evening.

  1. Cheb Khaled - N'ssi N'ssi (Dim's Exclusive Casbah Jam Re-Edit)

  2. Groove Armada - Chicago

  3. Quantic - Transatlantic

Guilty Pleasures

Mixed: june 2007

Genre: pop

Rogue Track: none

Highlight: Billy Piper’s ‘Honey to the Bee’

What I understand as Guilty Pleasure’s, in music at least are songs you really like that you know aren’t very sophisticated. It’s a way of discarding pretension but not just playing any old mobile-disco rubbish. I like these songs for many different reasons, I won’t go into them.

  1. Roachford – Cuddly Toy

  2. S-Club 7 – Don’t Stop Movin’ (Jewels and Stone Remix)

Classic Progressive

Mixed: April 2007

Genre: Progressive House

Rogue Track: My own remix of Cry Little Sister which was not a progressive house classic, but only because it was never released

Highlight: Fluke’s ‘Slid’

  1. Crescendo – Are You Out There

  2. Grace - Not Over Yet (BT's Spirit of Grace)

  9. Mory Kante - Yeke Yeke (Hardfloor Remix)

  10. Marcus Fellows – Cry Little Sister

I'm not sure what progressive house is now, or indeed am I sure what it was then, but this a from the limited collection I gathered on vinyl in the early nineties which more or less falls within this genre – classics because they are my favourites from the time. Long songs, long mixes.

Breaks

Mixed: April 2007

Genre: Breakbeat

Rogue Track: Breaker’s Revenge – I’m not really sure what this is, it sounds like a mix of the Arthur Baker track remixed by the Freestyler’s performed live but truth be told I’ve no idea as the track was not named

Highlight: clockwork Voodoo Freaks Remix of Air’s ‘Kelly Watch the Stars

Heavily influenced by the Freestyler’s 1998 mix ‘FSUK’ this is a collection of my favourite Hip Hop, Big Beat and Funk. Scratchtastic.

Groove

Mixed: November 2006

Genre: Rare groove

Rogue Track: DJ Yoda’s ‘Wheels’ which is a remix of a Level 42’s track ‘Sun Goes Down’ from 1984, remixed however in 2006.

Highlight: Kid Creole’s ‘You’re a Wonderful thing’

I’ve got lot’s and lot’s of eighties rare groove. I fucking love it. It’s half way between disco and funk, two of my favourite words. There were that many classics to choose from I ended up filling up two Cd’s.

Disc 1

  1. Shakatak - Down on the Street (12inch)

  2. Gene Chandler - Get Down (Rick Giantos Special 12 inch mix)

And Now For Something Completely Different...

Mixed: december 2006

Genre: comedy

Rogue Track: all of them

Highlight: Eminem’s ‘My Name Is’ – A song rarely heard in it’s uncensored form from an artist that used to be really funny’

Most audio can be categorised in some way, but sometimes when you are pawing through second hand record shops or downloading endless mp3’s you come across oddities that don’t really fit anywhere. By and large these are novelty records which is why I don’t really think this mix is for sustained listening. Inspired very much by Chris Morris’s radio programme ‘Blue Jam’ in which comedy is mixed with music and weird shit.

  1. Ricky V Valentine – Ghetto Classics

  2. Nina Gordon – Straight Outta Compton

  3. Team America – North Korean Melody

  4. Blue Jam – 4 Foot Car

  5. Monty Python – Ethel The Frog

  6. Midfield General – Midfielding (Feat Noel Fielding)

  7. Chef – Simultaneous Loving

  8. David Allen Coe – The Pussy Song

  9. Eminem – My Name Is (Unedited Album Version)

  10. Chris Morris – Monologue (Rothco The Dog)

  11. Adam Sandler – I’m Fucking Wasted

  12. Sublime - What I Got (Acappella Studio Version)

  13. Frank Sinatra – Strangers on my Flight

  14. Monty Python – Eric The Half Bee

  15. Blue Jam – Club News

  16. Kim Jong II – I’m Ronery (Team America Soundtrack)

  17. Barefoot – White Lines

  18. Henry Gross – Shannon (Introduced By Ron Burgundy)

  19. The Sex Pistols – Who Killed Bambi?

  20. Monty Python – I Like Chinese

  21. Paul Anka – Smells Like Teen Spirit

Seamanised - Too Many Daves

Mixed: SEPTEMBER 2006

Genre: progressive house

Rogue Track: Such a Good Feeling – the only song on the CD to be written by the duo themselves

Highlight: frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Welcome to the Pleasure Dome’

  1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasure Dome (Brothers In Rhythm Mix)

  2. Secret Life - Love So Strong (Brothers in Rhythm Experience)

  3. Billy Ray Martin - Loving Arms (Brothers in Rhythm Mix)

  4. Way Out West - Ajare (Brothers in Rhythm Mix)

  5. Inner City - Wish You Well (Brothers in Rhythm Mix)

  6. Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain (Brothers in Rhythm Mix)

  7. Sting - If You Love Someone, Set Them Free (A Brothers in Rhythm Soundtrack)

  8. The Brothers in Rhythm - Such a Good Feeling

I went through a ‘Brother’s in Rhythm’ phase whilst at college in which I lapped up just about any remix they produced at the time. This CD is compiled purely with songs produced by the duo. Dave Seaman is one of the pair, I’m not sure who the other chap is. This is very much a mix I produced for myself but you’re welcome to listen to it if you like.I

Cold War Dance Floor

Cold War Dance Floor 2

Mixed: SEPTEMBER 2006

Genre: EIGHTIES

Rogue Track: Talk Talk’s ‘It’s My Life’ which is a blend of two different mixes of the same song.

Highlight: Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy’s ‘Kiss Me’

Popular opinion deams the eighties to be a musical void. I disagree and I think you often have to listen to a 12” mix to fully appreciate what some songs were trying to do. Most of these tracks could be found on a Guilty Pleasure’s compilation but never in their in their extended format.

Cold War Dance Floor 2.jpg

Mixed: June 2007

Genre: Eighties

Rogue Track: Atmosphere’s ‘Dancing in Outer Space’ which is actually a remix from the mid nineties, but is very true to the original

Highlight: Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy’s ‘Icing on the Cake’

I didn’t intend to make a second mix in this genre but with the resurgence in popularity of eighties music amongst the binge drinking generation, I was becoming exposed to so much more of it. I also couldn’t find any other way of getting Grace Jone’s ‘Slave to the Rhythm’ into a mix in it’s full glorious, laborious 12” incarnation. Electro-Funk at it’s very best.

  1. King – Love & Pride (USA Summer Mix)

  2. Frankie Goes to Hollywood – The Only Star in Heaven

  3. Go West – We Close Our Eyes (12 inch)

  4. Atmosphere – Dancing in Outer Space (MAW Remix)

  5. Grace Jones – Slave to the Rhythm (12 inch mix)

  8. Duran Duran – Notorious (12 inch)

  9. Prince – Alphabet Street

  10. Curiosity Killed the Cat – Misfit (12 inch)

  11. Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy - The Icing On The Cake (Remix)

  12. Wham! – Young Guns

  13. Blancmange – Don’t Tell Me (12 inch)

Highlight: America – Horse with no Name

These CD’s are all about melody. And sometimes chords. Mainly down-tempo, sometimes cheesy, occasionally depressing. The songs are all good for a sing-along with the occasional oddity. This is also my favourite CD image. I don’t know why.

The Second instalment and now becoming a vehicle for the superior of the many cover’s that are now out there thanks to Radio One’s live lounge and the likes, but certainly not Jo Whiley. She’s rubbish.

I think this is the best in the Bubblegum series so far. As per the other mixes it strays towards middle of the road/radio 2 territory in parts which I don’t apologise for; but it also unearths some not-so-popular pop songs that deserve to be heard. I’ve also put a bit more work into the mixing, breaking away from the one on/one off technique employed in the previous mixes. Sorry about Katie Melua, but you have to admit it’s a beautifully arranged song. I also fancy her.

Highlight: 10c’s Bubble Bath – Found in a pile of discarded records

I was out in France when I put this mix together and there is no real genre. I’d uncovered a lot of music over the previous month’s and wanted to get them on CD, but couldn’t really think of any common theme other than that one mix was more for the dance floor and the other for the sofa. Eclectic is very much an overused term these days, particularly in mix CD’s but this could only be described as that. It is the first mix of a two-parter.

This is obviously the second mix, and probably the most popular I’ve done so far. The most mentioned song is ‘Doris - Did you give the world..’ which is a rarity from 1975 from the Swedish artist Doris Svensson which (as far as I’m aware) was never released here. It’s a bit sad isn’t it. Knowing that.
